Get Involved: Volunteering

One of the things we have learned over the years is that volunteers make a difference; a HUGE difference! The Foyer de Sion volunteer program offers kind-hearted people, ages 14 and older, an opportunity to travel to Haiti and offer time, love, and compassion to the children in our care. Currently we are gathering enough people to go for 5-10 days at a time every three to six months. We have seen first-hand the difference volunteers make and welcome the support and aid they provide.

Volunteer Programs

We have three main areas of focus for our volunteer programs.

• Assisting Caregivers at Foyer de Sion
• Construction of a new orphanage for Foyer de Sion
• Working in the schools sponsored by Foyer de Sion and in their surrounding communities

Caregiver Assistance Volunteers

Volunteers will be working in the orphanages helping with the children. The children benefit greatly from the extra interaction, stimulation, games and physical touch. We try to divide the group into 5 sub-groups:

• Infant care (feeding, infant massage, holding and caring for)
• Arts & Crafts with the older children
• Recreation (jump rope, basketball, hand ball games, teaching other games)
• Child Updates (photos, measurements etc. for adoptive parents)
• Medical screening (taking weight/height, performing evaluations) if we have medical personnel with us on the trip

Construction Volunteers

Foyer de Sion is currently building a new orphanage. Currently, Foyer de Sion's facilities consist of three rented homes. The cost of these rentals totals over $20,000 per year. This new orphanage will be large enough to house all of the children in these homes, thus drastically reducing the cost of housing the children.

Volunteers are needed to help with cinder block construction, tile work, cement work, and all other aspects of construction.

SionFonds Volunteers

Volunteers will travel to the sponsored schools where they will meet the children being sponsored through SionFonds. The volunteers will work and lodge in the schools and communities served by the sponsored schools. Some of the activities they may be involved in are as follows:

• Teaching a designated class at the school
• Teaching children English
• Helping to repair or upgrade the school facilities
• Playing games with the children
• Doing art projects or crafts with the children
• Recreational activities with the students
• Teaching hygiene
• Assisting in medical and dental evaluations (with appropriate medical personnel)
